HOW TO USE MUSTACHE WAX - AUTHORED BY HUNTER KELLY

How to use Mustache wax

When it comes to facial hair one way to stand out is with a styled mustache. Whether you are rocking a beard or just the mustache, mustache wax will help take you to that next level. When I first started growing my mustache back in 2018, I had never heard of mustache wax, when the mustache grew it would bother me too much and I would shave it down. This cycle would continue for almost four years. In 2021 I got my first tin of mustache wax, and it was a total game changer.

You may be asking yourself “why?” The reason why is because it is awesome! It helps you stand out in a crowd; people will come up and talk to you about it and snap photos with you. It also puts a smile on people’s faces, knowing you are the reason someone smiles is an amazing feeling. It will open doors you never knew existed and take you places you never expected to go.

When looking back at old photos you can see I had no idea how to properly apply the wax. Over the last year I have spent a lot of time working on styling my mustache and I want to share what I have learned with all of you!

How to Apply Mustache Wax

Before you apply a wax there are a few major steps you need to know. First thing is to apply heat to the mustache using either a blow dryer or flat iron (it is important to note heat protectant is a good thing to have on hand before you style). While the hairs are warm, start shaping them into the style you want to wear for the day. As the hair cools, they will retain the shape you made. The natural look will begin to fall and fray apart as the day goes on, and this is where the wax comes in.

When applying the wax, it is important to know how firm it is, stronger waxes will be a little tougher to warm up. My secret is to take a blow dryer and heat the wax until it becomes glossy (you are melting the wax but not to a liquid state). This makes the wax easier to scrape out and rub across your hairs. You will remove a pea sized amount of wax and rub it between your fingers then apply the wax to the hair. I take a comb and brush through the hairs to make sure the wax is deep in the mustache. Although, if you have thinner hairs this may not be needed. When the wax is applied, put the mustache back into the shape you made with the heat. If you rock a shorter mustache, you may not need more wax to last the day. Longer and thicker mustaches may take a few coats of wax to hold the style all day. I personally use between two and three coats.

How to clean your Mustache

The day is over, it’s time to remove the mustache wax. But how? I did not know the answer to this question for months after I started styling my mustache. I would just scrub it hard in the shower. The solution is much easier and less painful. Take some of your favorite beard oil or a dedicated mustache wax remover and add a few drops to the mustache. The oil will break down the wax and you can comb it right out. You may want to keep a paper towel or rag handy to keep your comb clean. After you may want to use our Daily Conditioning Wash or our Gentle Wash to wash the remaining dirt and grime away. After which, using a good quality beard oil to keep the skin and hair healthy.
